Yonge Street Mission’s (YSM) Food Bank is seeking a seeking a mature, friendly, organized and socially conscious Food Bank Delivery Unpacking/ Sorting Team Lead Volunteer, to help prepare our Food Bank for the week, and to help our staff to welcome and support newer volunteers!
Role Overview:
YSM addresses poverty in Toronto by focusing on vulnerable youth, financially struggling adults, and families in need. We also partner with community members in high-priority neighbourhoods to develop resident-led solutions where everyone has access to the resources they need to thrive and accomplish their goals. Part of this includes the support provided through our YSM Food Bank, where we offer nutritious bags of groceries based on family size, by appointment once every two weeks to our neighbours in need in Toronto Downtown East.
At the start of every week, on Monday, our Food Bank engages our team of committed Food Bank volunteers to assist in unloading food donations, and restocking our shelves, to help ensure that our Food Bank is ready to serve our community members throughout the week. The volunteer in this role will help to unload and restock our Food Bank and also support our Food Bank staff with supporting other Food Bank donation delivery support volunteers.
Role Requirements/ Responsibilities:
- Able to assist program staff with unloading food donations, restocking shelves and ensuring food bank is ready to serve community members throughout the week.
- Able to comfortably engage with a wide diversity of people from all walks of life and experience. A friendly, warm, and non-judgmental attitude is a must!
- Able to help program staff to welcome and support other Food Bank volunteers.
- Good English language comprehension, to be able to understand staff instructions and also communicate/explain instructions to other volunteers to be able to complete tasks
- Able to follow through on commitments: trustworthy, reliable, and honest
- Able to take direction: cooperative, enthusiastic, quick thinking, high energy and willing to take initiative
- Demonstrated commitment to principles of diversity equity, and inclusion
- Able to stand and walk around for extended periods of time
- Able to bend, reach, lift grocery bags/donations up to 50 lbs
- Able to follow YSM COVID-19 safety and general volunteer guidelines.
- Commitment: Able to make a minimum 6 month commitment (complete at least 1 shift weekly)
Hours of Position/ Location:
- Available Shifts: Mondays 11am-2pm
- Location: Gerrard & Parliament
