Yonge Street Mission’s (YSM) Double Take  (DT) Thrift Store is seeking Double Take Store Backroom Donation Sorter Volunteers! NOTE: As part of the application process for our longer-term roles you will be required to: Attend a virtual/in-person interview, Provide 3 references (professional/volunteer related) & Provide a Police Reference Check (PRC/VSS) 

Role Overview:

The Double Take Thrift Store is a YSM social enterprise with a twofold purpose: to provide hands-on employment training to job seekers, and act as a community resource where gently used, high-quality clothing, furniture and housewares can be purchased at affordable prices, in our store and online. If you’re curious about how YSM’s Double Take Thrift Store operates or how we manage to fill up our shelves with amazing merchandise, this is a great opportunity to see the behind-the-scenes action firsthand. You’ll learn how we sort, organize, and display everything that makes our store special!

As a Backroom Donation Sorter Volunteer at Double Take, you will play an essential role in helping to organize and maintain our inventory. This role is perfect for individuals who enjoy hands-on work and have attention to detail.

Role Responsibilities/ Requirements:

Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Sorting Donations – Categorize and organize incoming donations by size, type and condition.
  • Inspecting Garments – Check each item for stains, rips, or other imperfections to make sure everything on our shelves is in top shape for our community members.
  • Tagging Clothes – Help with tagging clothing items with prices, ensuring all tags are properly attached.
  • Merchandising – Assist in placing merchandise on the sales floor, ensuring it is well-arranged and easy for customers to browse.

Volunteer Requirements:

  • Closed-Toe Shoes – For safety and comfort while you work.
  • Lock for your Belongings – If you’d like to lock anything up in our lockers for the day
  • Physical Demands – The role involves being on your feet for extended periods and performing tasks that require frequent bending, stretching, and lifting objects up to 20 pounds.
  • Open and Happy Attitude – A positive and enthusiastic approach to help create a welcoming environment for everyone.
  • Commitment: Able to make a minimum 6 month commitment with shifts being flexible (complete at least 1 shift weekly) 

Hours of Position/Location:

  • Available Shifts: 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM  or  1:00 PM – 4:00 PM (Sun, Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs, Fri or Sat)
  • Location: Gerrard & Parliament
