5-ing COVID-19 was founded by David, a second year undergraduate in Medical Sciences. His student-led nonprofit aims to “go the extra mile” in support of front-line workers during the COVID pandemic.
“When my research internship for medical school was postponed, I felt ‘silenced’ by the pandemic,” said David. “I talked with friends and we were all yearning to make a positive impact on the community. I wanted to provide like-minded student leaders with a platform to ignite the skills they already had, prove we could make an impact in the fight against COVID-19, and show our philanthropic goals aren’t limited by our age.”
Over the course of the summer, the team of 150 students raised more than $10,000 in support of
SickKids Hospital and donated more than 20,000 supply items to shelters and nonprofits working with Ontarians experiencing poverty and homelessness. So far, 5-ing COVID-19 has donated roughly 4,000 items, including meals, face masks, personal care products, sanitation items and clothing to YSM.
“I first heard about YSM when I was looking for youth homeless shelters in the GTA to support. I was blown away by the kindness, generosity, and vision of this organization. It was inspiring and I wanted to do my part in supporting YSM.
“It’s been incredibly rewarding to support other youth. Our team is composed of entirely youth and student leaders. One of the main reasons for starting 5-ing COVID-19 was to provide youth with the opportunity to help [other] youth.”
David and his team have been pleasantly surprised by the support of the community. More than 300 individuals and 40 corporations have partnered with 5-ing COVID-19 to support front-line staff and struggling youth. “We created not only a nonprofit, but a community and family.
“We’re faced with an unprecedented challenge right now. If there is any opportunity to help at all, whether through donations, fundraising or item collection campaigns, it will make a world of difference — not only for now, but for years to come.”
